(Webmaster's note: The SLG Magician's Guild performed the following at the beginning of our Guild Barbecue on September 12th, 1999, to create sacred space for the event. This is why the instructions are given for three people. It can easily be adapted for any number of participants.)
Background: The following was found on a website: "While the etymologies of Morrígan and Badb are relatively straightforward, the other names associated with them are harder to derive. The relationship between Macha the name and macha the common noun is uncertain. If they are derived from the same root, then the name is taken from a common noun meaning 'field, plain,' or, in a narrower sense, "an enclosure for milking cows" (DIL s.v. macha) or "pasturage for beasts, closed field" (LEIA s.v. macha), to wit, a corral. Lucas notes that the common noun is usually translated 'milking yard', and suggests "that the macha was a small wattle-fenced enclosure" (1989: 31).49 The LEIA treats this etymology as problematic (s.v.).50 However, if all morrígna are considered together, the two glosses on fé, ime 'fence' and fal 'fence,' suggest that Macha the name, and macha, an enclosure, derive from the same root (Stokes 1904b: 342, 349-350).
We would stand in the center, each looking in a different direction. Then while reciting, in unison, the prayer below, we would rotate counterclockwise, while visualizing a great blue curtain surrounding Jacqui's house and yard. We should finish the prayer at the same time each of us has finished their respective protective fence. Or we could complete the fence more quickly and finish the prayer after. The last repetition of Her name would be after the fence has been established. All instances of using Her name would be vibrated. A top and bottom should also be added to the fence, thus making a total enclosure.
"We call upon Macha, whose name is the closed field, the fence, the milking yard, the pasturage for beasts. We ask, Holy Macha that a sacred space be established here, by and in thy name. Let a magickal enclosure surround us as a corral encloses our cattle, insuring safety and succor, that we may work our magick free from harmful outside influence and the forces of destructive chaos. Macha... Macha... Macha."
Then the cleansing: Visualize a bright, brilliance decending from the Upperworld, and up from the Underworld filling the protected area, cleansing it of all harmful energies and things, while saying:
"Peace up to heaven, heaven down to earth, earth beneath heaven, strength in each, a cup very full, gull of honey; mead in abundance. Summer in winter."
One could also modify the above to create shielding around a person as well. Vibrating Macha's name three times while visualizing a shield forming around you would act as a protective barrier around the person.
